Dreadquarters is a game developed by Headlock Games where the players are villains working together to protect their evil lair from invading heroes. The game’s draw is its unique decks, each with their own art style and special mechanics, to keep gameplay interesting.
The challenge of designing a rulebook for a game that has such diversity in its art is to find a way to unify it all. The best solution was to stick to a neutral palette to let the vibrancy of the game components shine. Yet, there still needed to be a level of personality baked into the rulebook in order for it to feel integral to the game’s fantastical nature. The decision was to design the rulebook as if it were an old tome that held the secrets and mechanisms of the lair and how to protect it. This aesthetic was communicated through the use of fonts that harkened the styles of an antique book and through the use of old world diagrams to decorate its pages.
